Telescope in the console
A tour of the Telescope screens — overview, live feed, endpoints, query shapes, journeys, traces and problems.
Open Telescope in the console. The sidebar is grouped by what you're looking for.
Insights
| Screen | Shows |
|---|---|
| Overview | Throughput and p95 request latency over time, the slowest endpoints, where database time goes, the most frequent exceptions, and what was recorded in the window. |
| Live feed | Journeys as they arrive — a live tail. |
| Endpoints | Every route (POST /orders/{id}, not each id) with count, error rate, p50 / p95. |
| Query shapes | Every normalised query with count, total and p95 time — where the database time goes. |
| Slow & N+1 | Journeys with slow queries, slow requests, N+1 and duplicate queries. |
Units of work
Requests, Jobs, Commands, Schedule and Job batches list journeys of each kind. Filter by status, tag, user, service or time.
Inside the work
Queries, Models, Events, Middleware, HTTP client, Cache, Redis, Mail, Notifications, Gates, Views, Dumps and Custom spans list entries of one type across all journeys — each links to the journey that produced it.
Problems
Exceptions and Logs recorded inside journeys. Exceptions link to their issue in Errors; the issue links back with View the request journey.
A journey
Opening a request, job or command shows:
- the waterfall — every entry on a timeline, nested under its spans;
- the request (headers, payload, response, user, session) or the job / command;
- the findings — N+1 groups, duplicates, slow queries — each pointing at the entries involved, with the file:line that ran them where the SDK records it;
- the trace: other batches in the same trace (the jobs it dispatched, the services it called) — open Traces for the combined view.
Configure
Install shows the setup for each stack. Settings controls recording — see Settings.
OpenTelemetry (any language)
Point any OpenTelemetry SDK — Go, Java / Spring, Ruby / Rails, Rust, Elixir, .NET, Node, Python — at Telescope over OTLP/HTTP JSON.
Telescope settings
Pause recording, sample, set thresholds, ignore paths and types, redact keys and monitor tags — from the console, without a deploy.
